Like every blogger ever, I am making a post with 28 random facts about me to celebrate my 28th birthday. I like reading these posts because even though they’re not helpful or applicable to everyone, they help me get to know a person better.
- Turning 27 was a bigger deal to me than turning 30 will be. Growing up, my dad found some survey of when people felt like they were really adults and they consensus was 27. He latched onto that and whenever we wanted to do something he would say “not until you’re 27!”. We couldn’t date, drive, etc until we turned 27 and now that I’ve been an “adult” for a whole year I’m here to say DO NOT WAIT until you’re 27 or any age to do anything (I mean, follow the laws and all). Waiting for permission to do things is not a good way to live. Asking for forgiveness is hard too, but I’d rather ask for forgiveness once in a while than ask for permission for everything.
- I love weddings. I stop myself from asking 10million questions to any newly engaged friend or family member because I really love all the details that go into major personal events like that. I think how you plan your wedding says a lot about you and weddings are important.
- I love animals, but I am allergic and so is my husband, so I won’t ever be able to live with animals again. I lived with cats growing up, and I remember just constantly being stuffed up. I just got used to it after a while but now I can’t imagine being allergic to my house again. My house is my place of comfort.
- I’m a licensed cosmetologist. I loved working in a salon as the receptionist so I went to college to get a business degree so I could own a salon one day and went to cosmetology school right after college. As it turns out, I hated cosmetology school and working in a salon as a stylist is much different than as a receptionist so I had to quick choose a new career. I’m still figuring it out 6 years later.
- I played violin for 8 years and piano for 10 years but haven’t played either in the last 10 years. I would love to get back into playing the piano, but it’s expensive to get a good keyboard (I’m picky) and I don’t have a good place for an upright.
- I’m a INTJ, Ennegram type 5, Introvert, Taurus
- I have a sister and 2 brothers. While I loved growing up with that many siblings, I can’t imagine parenting that many kids.
- My favorite color is Pink. Everything I got as a child was pink and everything my sister got was purple and we stuck with those colors to differentiate our stuff.
- My favorite flower is the daisy. One of my only remaining memories of my Grandma is gardening and planting daisies in the yard.
- I kill every plant I get. I try to keep plants alive, but either I under-water or over-water and I haven’t figured out how to keep anything alive yet. I’ll stick to fake plants inside and let my mom help me with my yard.
- I don’t like condiments. I will sometimes put ketchup on a hot dog, but otherwise I don’t like ketchup, mustard, mayo, etc on anything.
- I love The Office. I would watch it in high school with my family and in college I remember running back to the dorms from class so I could catch it (this was before hulu/streaming was popular). I used to own all the seasons but now that it’s on hulu or netflix pretty much all the time I sold my copies.
- My favorite movie is Breakfast at Tiffany’s. I know, it’s #basic, but I love the style. I also like Marilyn Monroe movies and own most of my favorites.
- I like all types of music. I really think that music has a strong effect on my mood and there is a type of music for every situation. When my husband has Sirius XM in his car, my favorite stations were 40’s on 4 and BPM (electronic music).
- I am really good at baking chocolate chip cookies. I follow a recipe in an old Betty Crocker cookbook my mom gave me when I moved out and it has never let me down.
- I 80% stopped eating dairy. I will still eat regular ice cream (even though almond milk or coconut milk ice cream is awesome), and I won’t tell anyone to make something special for me, but I won’t use dairy when cooking myself. My skin doesn’t like dairy and I like my skin so it’s a sacrifice worth making.
- Yoga is my favorite type of exercise. It is pretty expensive to take classes, but it’s so worth it for me. If you’re new to yoga, you should practice poses in front of a mirror so you know if you’re doing the poses correctly or not.
- I love learning and wish I could go to school for the rest of my life to keep learning new things.
- I enjoy organizing, sorting, labeling, and all types of putting things in order. My house isn’t always in clean, but I always know where something is. I also couldn’t survive without listmaking. Just writing out a list sometimes is enough to clear my head so I can get things done.
- I used to drink a coke or a coke slushie every single day and somehow didn’t get cavities until now as an adult when I eat the least amount of sugar I’ve ever eaten. I’ve recently given up all caffeine (except the small amounts in chocolate – can never give up chocolate) and it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.
- I have always been a book reader. I like murder mystery (favorite is Mary Higgins Clark), Memoir/Self-Help, Business Books and Christian Living books the most. When I tried to declutter books before, it felt like I was getting rid of my prized possessions and I regret getting rid of them. I don’t feel the negative effects of clutter when it’s books so I shouldn’t have gotten rid of them.
- When I grow up, I want to be as impactful as my Grandma Pat. She is remembered by many for all the good she did and how fun and kind she was. The minutiae of life matters, but being kind and caring matters more in the end.
- I love shopping and it was a problem for my bank account until I started reading more decluttering books. While I regret decluttering books, I don’t regret decluttering a lot of other things. I have started to really embrace the mindset of treating my home as a home instead of a museum. Beautiful things can stay at the store; they are still pretty to look at but I don’t have to take it home with me. I don’t live in a storage unit and I can donate things I’m not using so other people can use them.
- I have had my hair pretty much every color available. I loved having pink hair the most, and I like having very cool toned blonde hair. I’m not picky about my hair because I know anything that goes wrong can be fixed and it will grow back if it’s cut too short. I don’t plan on having 100% natural colored hair ever again in my life.
- I really like modern memory keeping/scrapbooking. In he 90’s it was overwhelming because honestly, people took it way too far. Now, even if you just put pictures in a photo album with a bit of text about the picture and who is in it, that is great! I think memory keeping is important and there are studies to show that it is.
- Writing this list was harder than I thought it would be. I know, I started a blog about myself, but writing 28 things about myself is a lot of things. I don’t think I’m all that interesting and I’m rather self-deprecating.
- I like living in Grand Rapids, but I’m only here because my family is here. If my family would agree to moving away, I would move anywhere warmer. Michigan winters are not for the faint of heart.
- My husband and I send each other pictures of cute animals or cute babies pretty much all day. Our gchat is at least 30% us saying “bawwwwwww” in response to a cute picture. If you need a pick-me-up in the middle of the day and your best friend doesn’t send you cute pictures all day, just look at the top 10 pictures on reddit’s r/aww and your day will instantly be better I promise. Also follow We Rate Dogs on twitter because that is pretty adorable too.
