Do you want to save time running errands? Do you always end up buying stuff that isn’t on your list which drives up your grocery bill? This is me (I can always find a reason I need to buy cookie dough), so when I heard of Shipt I thought it was the perfect solution. I signed up for a month for $14 and decided to give it a try.
Shipt is in West Michigan with Meijer in a fairly small area. Luckily, I live in one of the bigger suburbs so I could get my groceries delivered. I LOVE Meijer, but sometimes taking the time to go through the whole store is tiring and it just seems more convenient to have someone shop for me. #firstworldproblems
Meijer also has a service called Curbside where they have someone shop for you, but you have to go to the store and pick it up, like ordering take out for groceries. Unfortunately, Curbside isn’t offered at my closest store so it would not be as convenient for me to use this feature.
Here are the Pros and the Cons I found while using Shipt:
It is easy to place your grocery order. You can easily search for whatever you need and add it to your order. You can order through the website or through the app.
There is a sale section so you know what’s on sale at Meijer that week so you don’t have to look at the Meijer ad before you place your order.
After you place the order, you can choose a range of times of when you want it delivered. My area doesn’t deliver between Midnight and 5am, but any other time was available for delivery. You can also add to the order as long as the shopper hasn’t checked out yet. This is perfect for me because I always remember something that I needed last minute.
It is easy to communicate with the shopper through the app or through texting. The shopper will text you when they start shopping for you and ask if you want to add anything to the order or if you have any new special requests. They will also text you if something is out of stock and ask if you want something else instead. I like a specific type of granola bar that doesn’t have dairy, and the store was out of stock, so she asked if I wanted any of the other options that brand offers.
It is illegal to throw away your cans and bottles that have a deposit in Michigan, and most people I know return their recyclables to their grocery store while they’re there. Some of the convenience is lost when you still have to go to the store to return cans and bottles. Also, the shopper doesn’t see you before the shopping trip, so if you have bottle return receipts, you can’t use those towards your grocery order.
You can’t use your own mperks. When Meijer does good coupons like $5 off your order, it doesn’t look like there’s a way to use that on your order.
You can’t read the nutritional facts on the items. In the app, there is a picture of the item, but it doesn’t show the nutritional facts of the item. If you have a food allergy, you would have to know ahead of time if you can eat something or not or look up the nutritional facts on the manufacturer’s website.
You can’t buy meat by the pound, they are in packs and you’ll get something that is close to the size you request. I was nervous having someone else pick out meat anyways, but she picked out a package that was something I would have picked out myself anyways. There are limited amounts of their meat on the website, it was hard to find exactly which chicken I wanted .
The prices are higher than the store – this is how Shipt makes money. For example: the chicken I ordered was $9.49 from Shipt, and the price stamped on the package was $9.13. Not a huge difference, but since there is a difference, I don’t think I saved money by using the service instead of going myself.
Ultimately, Shipt is not worth it for me in my current situation. I can think of many situations where it would be beneficial to have this service including: injury or disability making it hard to get out and shop, a schedule busier than mine, or being a parent of a young child which makes shopping difficult.
