Simple DIY Valentines Day Cards

This past weekend I wanted to get ahead of the game and made up some Valentines Day cards for my husband and some of our friends. They were really simple to put together and since almost everything was on sale at Michael’s it was really low cost (pro-tip: NEVER buy something there without checking for coupons, there are ALWAYS coupons).

I gathered all my supplies together to get started. I purchased blank white cards so I could just decorate them. I had gathered a few saying I knew I wanted to use so when I was at Michael’s I looked for scrapbook paper that would make sense for those sayings.

The first one I made was for the saying “My life would ‘knot’ be the same without you”. This would be cute to give someone a nautical bracelet with a knot, or earrings with a knot or bow on them. I used the card to measure how much of the scrapbook paper to cut out.

With some of the scraps I added detail to the envelope. Honestly, if I knew I was going to mail this card, I wouldn’t add anything to the envelope that could get caught in a mail machine like glued-on paper.

I thought it would be fun to get out my calligraphy pen to write out the card, but because of the paper I used it was hard to write over the texture. It took a couple iterations to get it right, but in the end it doesn’t have to be perfect; it’s the thought that counts, right?

The next saying I wanted to put on a card was “You’re on Point” with a cactus on it. I found this paper at Michael’s which made it super simple to make.

I initially wrote directly on the paper, but I don’t think it looks clear enough, so I wrote it on the gray paper again and glued on top of it.

I also like the saying “We were meant to bee” so I took some yellow paper and made a little bee for the front of this card. I gave up on the calligraphy pen at this point and just used a Sharpie marker. This would be cute if it said “We were meant to bee friends” and was gifted with a Burts Bees chapstick or something similar.

I took more of the yellow paper and found this cute saying on some of the Valentine’s stickers at Michael’s; “I love you watts and watts”. I could have cut out the light bulb in the yellow paper, but this was simpler and easier.

Now that I had all my fun sayings done, I made some more classic Valentines cards with red and pink frills.

I like that some are really simple with just a couple accents and some are more elaborate. I don’t think a card needs to be really elaborate to be meaningful. I found some more sayings online that I think would be fun to make that I have listed below. Do you like to make cards or do you buy ones already made at the store?

Ideas for Sayings on your Cards:

(Inspired from Parks & Recreation’s Galentines Day episode) Uteruses before Duderuses, Hoes before Bros, Ovaries before Brovaries, Sisters before Misters, Bellas before Fellas, Bestes before Testes

You’re the Sweetest – pair this with the recipent’s favorite candy

I’m a sucker for you – Put a sucker with the card

Donut forget how much you are loved – This would be cute written on a box of donuts, or on a card with a donut cutout or sticker
